On Feb. 7, 2022, President Biden said: "If Russia invades - that means tanks and troops crossing . . . the border of Ukraine again, there will no longer be a Nord Stream 2. We will bring an end to it." Asked how he could do so, he said: "We will, I promise you, we'll be able to do it."
In 2021, Russia supplied roughly 45% of the natural gas imported by the European Union. Russian supply accounted for around 32% - 50% of Germany's gas needs. On 26 September 2022, a series of clandestine bombings and subsequent underwater gas leaks occurred on the Nord Stream 1 and Nord Stream 2 natural gas pipelines. Both pipelines were built to transport natural gas from Russia to Germany through the Baltic Sea, and are majority owned by Gazprom (Russian state-owned gas company). The perpetrators' identities and the motives behind the sabotage remain debated.
A Danish official said these Nord Stream gas leaks could emit a CO2 equivalent of 14.6 million tonnes (32 billion pounds), similar to one third of Denmark's total annual greenhouse gas emissions. The methane emissions from the leaks are equal to a few days of the emissions from regular fossil fuel production. However, the leaks set a record as the single largest discharge of methane, dwarfing all previously known leaks, such as the Aliso Canyon gas leak.
"The Western governments are silent even as the US says through anonymous sources that Ukraine is responsible for the Nord Stream attack, but they won't blame them publicly. And so the United States continues to arm Ukraine to the teeth in hopes of extending the war and avoid peace. The Germans say it's Ukraine but will not release their official investigation and will not make an announcement. The final obscenity is the people in the West who claim to be environmentalists and claim to care about climate change and the environment say nothing about the worse release of methane gas in human history, but in fact whose actions reveal they don't actually care about climate change and continue to support this war and its eco-terrorism. In a bizarre twist, even Greta Thunberg travelled to Ukraine to meet with Zelenksyy after the Nord Stream Bombing."
